I landed safely in Phoenix, Arizona yesterday (thank you!). There are a few things that sort of stand-out about Phoenix when you arrive. Here are my very first impressions of Phoenix, AZ:
-
1. It is hot (outside). I hopped off of the plane and walked into a well conditioned airport. I walked outside the airport, and got pimp-slapped by gush of hot air. This turns into a trend very quickly, as every building is air-conditioned, so you are constantly walking from hot to cool, from cool to hot, and back again.
2. It is relatively empty. I did quite a bit of driving yesterday, and Phoenix just seemed empty. Every place I went there was just gobs of land with nothing. You would see a row of stores, a place where a store could go, and then more stores. In addition, they are putting up some new developments (stadium, stores, etc.) over what used to be farm land. So you have farm land and then a few feet away giant buildings. It just seems odd. Especially since the developed areas have not been fully utilized as of yet.
3. Sex sells (a lot). Maybe it was just the parts that I drove around yesterday, but there seems to be a lot of strip-clubs and sex shops around Phoenix. Now I know all major cities have their fair share of sex commerce, but Phoenix’s seems to be obviously higher than some other comparably large cities.
4. It is dark. I guess this is partly due to the empty space I talked about above, but Phoenix is dark. Really dark. It seemed like most of the neighborhoods are lacking in the street/house lights. I drove by so many areas that were practically pitch black that it just shocked me. There would be a row of dark houses and empty space, a gas station, and then more darkness. Odd.
Well those are my first-impressions. As for the trip, so far so good. I went to a club last night (surprise, surprise). I do not remember the name of it, but it was one of the hoodest clubs I have ever been to in my entire life. Fun, but real hood. Adios.
