Miami - Part 01

So I landed safely in Ft. Lauderdale, FL the other day, got my cheap little rental car (it is a Chevrolet Cobalt), and hit the freeway towards Miami, FL. And so far, everything has been good, sort of…

It has been two days, and we have gotten two extremes regarding weather. The first day it was sunny (about 85 degrees) and I got myself a nice little sun-tan/burn. The second day it was raining (about 65 degrees) and when I say rain I mean rain. There is no Washington drizzle around here. There is rain. Serious, serious, rain. Rain that will get you soaked in under less than 60 seconds.

The other negative is our hotel is whack. The first room they gave us we had to move out of because the shower was kind of moldy and the toilet did not flush. The room we are in now is OK, but hotel overall is definitely sub-par. The beds are not that comfortable, the towels are rough and likely to cut me before my vacation is over, the bar/restaurant is a slightly better hotel that sits adjacent to ours, no free internet access (well, that is not entirely true. I am writing this thanks to some soul leaving their WiFi connection open to anyone. Yes!), and the pool/hot tub is dirty. Dirty! How can you have a dirty pool/hot tub in Miami, FL? Oh that is right, our hotel is not ‘in’ Miami, FL … it is in Hialeah, FL.

That is right. When I booked the hotel Orbitz told me the hotel was located in Miami, FL. Wrong. In fact, the hotel is located in a community located outside of Miami called Hialeah, FL. I do not want to say anything explicit about this place, but I will let it be known that everywhere (everywhere) around here (other than our hotel of courses) has bars on the windows and gates around the parking lot. It definitely does not present itself as the safest place in Florida.

One good thing I will say about this hotel, is that it is located directly across the street from the Westland Mall. It is not the greatest mall, but it is close, so I tend to spend a lot of time there. There is also a ton of retail stores surrounding the mall, so it is great for shopping.

OK. That is all for this update. I will attempt to post some pictures of our fabulous hotel, the malls, the streets, the sky, and everything else I see in my next post. Adios folks.
