It is very infrequent that I come across an idea from the older-generation and think “wow, that was a really good idea.” Fortunately, today is one of those days. A judge from the 38th District Court, in an effort to reduce jail overcrowding, placed survey listing 98 inmates online, and let the community vote on which ones they felt should be released from jail.
“Review the list of individuals who are currently in jail through the 38th District Court and indicate whether or not you believe that any of these individuals should be released early,” a note accompanying the survey says.
“While it is solely my responsibility to decide who, if anyone, will be released early, I welcome and am very interested in your perspective and feedback.”
I personally think this is a fabulous idea and has the increased benefit of informing lawmakers on what the community really feels warrants jail time. So kudos to you judge. In addition, the judge is looking to affect overcrowding in other ways:
“Maybe the Legislature needs to change some laws,” she said. “Maybe instead of jailing people who drive on a suspended license, we should take their cars.”
I find it funny that she should mention that, because that is exactly what the Bellingham police have started doing. And just like the other idea, I fully support it.
