I used to hate browsing the internet at school. I mean really hate it.
Why? Simple, the only way to do it was to use Internet Explorer, and, I
just do not feel comfortable using IE for anything on the web other
than viewing allmusic
(their website has some features which only work with IE … fucking dumb
ass web designers). I just feel like I am asking to get some personal
data stolen from some spyware, malware, etc, etc. Maybe I’m paranoid,
or maybe I’m smart. I guess it would just depend on who you asked, but
either way, I found the solution. Firefox!
Now,
Firefox isn’t new to me. In fact, I use Firefox on a daily basis on my
home computer. To me it is just an all around better browser. It
doesn’t have the multitude of spyware attacking it, it has tabbed
browsing (a feature I just can’t live without anymore), and my personal
reason for using it, it automatically deletes everything once you close
the browser (if you tell it too). All the cookies, jpgs, and other
miscellaneous temporary files that you viewed while browsing the net
are all gone instantly. It’s fucking great. I’m not sure why that
little feature makes me feel so much safer while browsing the net, but
nonetheless it does.
So, how exactly am I able to use Firefox on
campus? Easy! Once you install Firefox on your home machine, you simply
copy the application folder, your profile folder (if you want), and
create a small batch file on a USB disk and you’re done. That’s it.
Whenever you want to use Firefox simply plug in your USB disk,
double-click the batch file…and poof…there is Firefox in all its glory.
Now, there is a tutorial online here
that explains this procedure in a little more detail. Look for “Run
Firefox from removable media”. Take note though, in order for me to get
it to work I had to change my batch file from…
start \Firefox\firefox.exe -profile \FFProfile
to
start Firefox\firefox.exe -profile FFProfile
… not sure why, but for me it only worked without the slashes. Enjoy.
