Netgear WGT624

So I purchased a router the other day, a Netgear WGT624
router to be exact. I wasn’t exactly in need of one, but I picked it up
for an amazing price, so I figured why not. Well, six days after I
purchased it, it arrived at my house (bought it from Amazon), only to have the thing die on me about an hour after it arrived while trying to update the firmware. Dammit!

In complete disappointment, I start reading the net to see if I can
come up with a way to fix it … nope! It’s dead. Definitely dead. I
even took the time to register the damn product and call tech support.
Their response … dead! I figure out that the router that I got was a
v1 of the router and it is known to die from various things (especially
updating the firmware). It would be just my luck that I would get stuck
with a dead router. Highly frustrated, I got in contact with Amazon at
their incredibly hard to find phone number, which is 1-800-201-7575 for
those who might need it, and they were more than happy to have a new
one shipped out to me almost immediately. I say almost because it was
Friday when I called and they couldn’t have a new one shipped until
Monday, which meant it wouldn’t arrive until Wednesday. So, I waited…

Then today (Wednesday), my new router finally showed up. The first
thing I did was check the back of the router to see whether or not I
got a v1 or a v2 router … v2!!! These new routers are supposed to fix a
lot of the problems that the v1’s contain, and, it seems that it indeed
does. I hooked my router up in about 1min, connected my one wired
computer, set all the appropriate settings in the router (about 3min),
enabled my wireless connection (roughly 10min), and am currently using
my one wireless computer with no problem. I get a pretty decent signal
considering the router is upstairs at the complete opposite end of the
house. I love when things work out. Now, all I have to do is take this
broke router to the post office and have it shipped back to Amazon,
which, they said they will gladly reimburse me for. Now I just hope
this thing doesn't flop out on me in the future.

For those interested in purchasing one of these routers. There is
no way to tell the difference just from glancing at the box whether
it's a v1 or a v2. However, if you look at the power supply listed on
the box, the v1 should have a “5 VDC 2A Power Adapter”, whereas the v2
has a “12 VDC 1A Power Adapter” listed. That's the only difference that
I could notice on the boxes to help differentiate between the v1 and
the v2, and trust me, you do not want to purchase a v1.
